Karnak temple walk on Luxor East Bank

Nadia Haddad last paced Karnak on 22 May 2026. This walk begins at the Avenue of Sphinxes gate and ends at the sacred lake loop suitable for late-afternoon shade.

Entry and ticket snapshot

Main ticket booth sits at the first pylon. Student rates require ISIC and passport match. Combo tickets with Luxor Temple exist seasonally—ask at the window rather than third-party kiosks. Opening hours typically 06:00–17:30; sound-and-light shows operate on separate evening tickets.

Walk sequence (2.5–3 hours)

  1. First pylon forecourt — twenty minutes for scale photos before crowds cluster.
  2. Hypostyle hall — forty-five minutes; twelve central columns dominate; clapper guards discourage shouting due to echo.
  3. Obelisks of Hatshepsut and Thutmose — fifteen minutes; best light before 10:00.
  4. Festival hall (Akh-menu) — twenty minutes; cooler stone in midday heat.
  5. Sacred lake circuit — thirty minutes; benches under mast trees; good family pause.

Conservation closures

Seventh pylon scaffolding cycles every few seasons. Nadia logs closure maps in monthly bulletins for retainer clients; check the on-site board at entry. When a pylon is closed, add ten minutes to hypostyle hall because crowds bottleneck at the open axis.

Sound and light

Evening shows narrate in multiple languages on rotation nights. Winter schedules start around 18:30; summer closer to 20:00. Tickets sell at the Karnak booth and select Luxor hotels. Tripods banned during show—handheld only per photography rules.

Getting there from hotels

East Bank hotels south of Luxor Temple use taxi ten to fifteen minutes; calèche rides are scenic but negotiate price before boarding. Budget routes include microbus from Luxor station when you accept shared waits.

Combine with West Bank?

Do not attempt Karnak morning plus Valley of Kings same day in summer—heat exhaustion risk. Schedule West Bank tombs on a separate dawn day. Upper Egypt continuation to Abu Simbel fits best after two Luxor nights.

Coastal arrivals

Travelers from Alexandria often fly Borg El Arab–Luxor direct in shoulder season; allow one soft day before Karnak walking.

Guide hire at the gate

Official guide desks sit inside the first pylon. Rates are posted; tip separately. Our walk sheet assumes self-guiding with this article—guides may reorder sequence for their narrative.

Midday heat protocol

Between June and August, start at 06:00 opening or after 15:30. Hypostyle hall stone radiates heat; sacred lake loop has tree shade. Carry one litre water per person minimum.

Barque shrine detail

The small barque shrine near the lake often skipped—allow ten minutes for carved barque scenes if Egyptology depth matters to your party.

Luxor Pass consideration

Multi-site pass economics depend on days stayed—calculate three temple entries plus West Bank before buying. Pass office at Karnak sometimes shorter queue than Luxor Temple.

East Bank hotel walks

Hotels near Karnak avenue allow dawn walk if you feel safe in low light—taxi still recommended for solo women travelers. Sound-and-light show ticket booth opens two hours before show; seats unassigned.

Scarab statue tradition

Clockwise scarab walk seven times is optional cultural note—not required for site entry.

Avenue of Sphinxes partial

Karnak end of avenue still under restoration—do not expect through-walk to Luxor Temple yet.

Scarab statue loop

Optional clockwise scarab walk tradition—seven circuits—not required for admission.
